This object is one of those listed in the original edition of the New General Catalog .
In January 2008, a group of astronomers at Princeton University under the direction of Alicia Soderberg studied the supernova SN 2007uy , which flared up in the galaxy NGC 2770, using the Swift orbiting telescope. Thanks to this, another supernova - SN 2008D was detected on January 9th . This was the first outbreak observation from the start. [one]
It is noteworthy that the supernova SN 1999eh , SN 2007uy , SN 2008D , belonging to the rare type Ib, were registered in this galaxy, and all three outbreaks occurred within a short period of time - 10 years. [2] The reason for this phenomenon has not yet been clarified, although it is most likely due to pure chance rather than some exceptional features of NGC 2770.
