Museum of Kon-Tiki

The Kon-Tiki Museum ( Norwegian Kon-Tiki Museet ) is a museum dedicated to the life and work of the Tour Heyerdahl . It was opened on May 15, 1950. Located in Oslo on the Bugdei Peninsula, next to the Fram Museum . The main exhibit of the museum is the Kon-Tiki raft, on which Thor Heyerdahl crossed the Pacific Ocean in 1947 .

Raft "Kon-Tiki"

The museum’s exposition presents the vessels and objects used during all the expeditions of the Tour Heyerdahl - “Kon-Tiki”, “ Fatu Khiva ” and “Ra II” , as well as travel to Easter Island . In addition, the museum has a special room for temporary exhibitions. Part of the exhibition - a 30-meter exhibition of caves - is built in the likeness of caves on Easter Island. The underwater part of the museum’s exposition depicts a scene from an expedition on the Kon-Tiki raft, when fish of various species snooped under the raft, including the largest representative of the ichthyofauna - the whale shark . The museum also has a cinema and a gift shop.

History

After the Kon-Tiki raft returned to its homeland, the Norwegians decided in 1949 to build a new house for him on the Bugdei Peninsula outside of Oslo. The founders of the museum were Thor Heyerdahl and one of the members of the Kon-Tiki expedition, Knut Haugland , who had been the director of the museum for over 40 years. About 200,000 people visit the Kon-Tiki Museum annually, and in total, more than 15 million visitors from around the world have visited the museum since its inception.

Practical Information

  • The museum is open year round seven days a week, except December 25, December 31, January 1, May 17 ( Constitution Day of Norway ).
  • Entrance ticket costs 100 CZK for adults and 40 CZK for children from 5 years old, there are discounts for students, senior citizens, school classes and groups.
  • You can get to the museum by ferry or bus number 30, departing every 15 minutes from the city center.
