Nara (language)

Nara (also Nera, Barea, Barya) is the Nilo-Sahara language spoken by the Nara people - mainly in western Eritrea , in the Barentu region and to the north of it [1] . This language is often confused with the kunama language, spoken south. As a second language, the Nara people use tiger and Arabic . According to Tsige Hailemichael, “... the Nara language is threatened by a quick extinction” [2] .

The following variants of the Latin language name are available: Nara , Nera , Barea , Barya , Baria , Higir , Koyta , Mogareb , Santora . The name "bara / barja" is considered derogatory, since barya in translation from Amharic means "slave".

Content

Classification

At the family level, Nara is actually an isolate . Traditionally, it is included in the East Sudanese superfamily as part of the Nilo-Saharan macrofamily . Inside the first, according to the classification of C. Eret [3], together with the Taman-Nubian family, it forms an Astabaran group .

Dialects

There are 4 dialects in the Nara language, between which there are significant differences: Higir, Higher, Mogareb, Koyta, Santora . Each of the 4 dialects is divided into dialects .

Writing

To write the language, writing is used both on the basis of Ethiopian writing and on the basis of the Latin alphabet.
