Biography
In 1832 he entered the University of Kiel , where he studied law and history, then continued his studies at the University of Berlin in the classes of philosophy and evangelical theology. In 1836 he prepared and defended a dissertation under the guidance of the renowned Leopold von Ranke . In the same year he was invited to the post of full professor in Hanover .
Since 1842 - professor in Kiel; at the same time, at the invitation of Professor G. G. Pepper, he joined the Monumenta Germaniae Historica team. After the reorganization of the editorial board in 1875, he headed this publication. Prior to this, in 1849-1875. Professor of the University of Gottingen . He is considered the founder of the so-called “Göttingen historical school”, which set itself the task of developing methods of criticizing the historical source and applying them to the material of medieval history of Germany [6] . Among his many students was, in particular, G. H. Hildebrand [7] .
In 1848 he was elected to the Frankfurt Parliament .
In 1842, he married Clara Schelling, daughter of the philosopher Friedrich Wilhelm Schelling .
