Biography

Canudo was born in Joya del Colle (province of Bari) on January 2, 1879. Since 1902 he lived in Paris (French friends jokingly called him - at the place of birth - a “bartender”). He entered the circles of artistic avant-garde , led a section of Italian literature in the magazine Mercure de France . In 1911, he published an article manifesto The Birth of the Seventh Art [5] , where he called the cinema “plastic movement” and “the child of the machine and the senses” (later, in 1919 , he called dance the sixth art, and the movie took the name of the seventh art - this term entered in widespread use) [6] .

Adjacent to futurism , published in Paris the literary and artistic magazine Montjouis ( French Montjoie - the medieval battle cry and the motto of the French kings), established the Mondays of the magazine when the editorial staff gathered the whole color of the Paris avant-garde - they were visited by Apollinaire , Sandrar , Farg , D 'Annunzio , Marinetti , Georges Braque , Leger , Delaunay , Ravel , Sati , Honegger , Millau , Stravinsky and others. Organized in the editorial office in 1913 a small exhibition of Chagall's works. In an article dedicated to this exhibition, he called the artist “the most brilliant colorist” among avant-garde painters.

A film was made, where artists acted. I depicted one of them. We were all students at the school of the venerable painter. I don’t remember whether he himself or one of the students fell in love with either the model, or the customer.

Member of the First World War , was wounded. He was awarded the French Military Cross and the Legion of Honor for military valor.

In the article Defend the art of cinema! ( 1920 ) defended the independence of cinema from market pressure and the commercial interests of filmmakers. He published the Newspaper of the Seven Arts ( 1920 ), founded the Club of Film Lovers ( 1921 , broke up in 1924 ). The club, which was attended by Cocteau , Cavalcanti , Epstein and L'Erbier , is considered the first film club in history [7] . There is a portrait of Canudo by Picasso (1923).

Creativity

He released several novels, poetry books, and essay collections.

Posthumous fate

Currently, Canudo is considered as one of the first theorists of cinema, the founders of cinema aesthetics. In 1977 , an international conference dedicated to his centenary was held in Italy. The Riccioto Canudo Foundation operates, among other things publishing its works and books about it. His correspondence with Apollinaire , a monograph on a creative relationship with Stravinsky , was published.
