Currently, the museum fund consists of about 1100 paintings, 4500 drawings, 18000 graphic files. In addition to the artist’s works, the museum stores several personal belongings of the artist, including those that he bequeathed to the city after his death ( 1944 ).

The museum was inaugurated in 1963 .

By the summer of 2020, the Munch Museum is due to move to a new building in the center of the Norwegian capital on the banks of the Oslo Fjord . The new museum will be almost five times larger than the current one. The building has already been erected. As of autumn 2018, workers were engaged in interior decoration. It will be a cultural center in which it is planned to collect the maximum number of artistic achievements of Norwegian artists [1] .

Robbery

On August 22, 2004, the museum was attacked. Armed criminals stole paintings " Scream " and " Madonna ." In May 2006, three persons accused of theft were sentenced to prison terms, and in August the police managed to find work. During the stay in the hands of the abductors, both canvases were damaged: they were scratched and traces of moisture, the canvases were torn.

According to the representative of the museum, the spot in the corner in the picture "Scream" will remain noticeable. “The restorers did not want to take any irreversible actions,” the museum said, adding that in the future, there may be methods to remove the stain from the picture.
