Biography
Shirley Anita St. Hill was born in 1924 in Brooklyn , New York . In 1946 she graduated from Brooklyn College, receiving a bachelor of arts degree, and in 1952 she was awarded a Master of Arts degree from Columbia University . In 1968, she became the first black woman to be elected to the US Congress [3] . Chisholm worked in Congress for seven terms from 1969 to 1983. In 1972, she nominated her candidacy for the presidency of the United States from the Democratic Party , becoming the first woman and representative of the African American community to advance to this role in the Democratic Party. He is the author of two books.
She died on January 1, 2005 in Florida at the age of 80 [4] .
