Biography

From a Jewish family, son of the owner of a textile factory. Relative of the writer Stefan Zweig . He did not follow in the footsteps of his father, carried away by literature. He studied philosophy in Prague , then in Vienna , the course never finished. Returning to Prague in 1930 , he worked part-time at various publishing houses. Since 1937 he served in various positions at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs . He spent the war years in Brussels , Paris , Lebanon , and New York . His family died in Nazi concentration camps.

After the war he returned to Czechoslovakia. In 1948 , when the Communists came to power in the country, he left through the diplomatic line to Denmark, Norway, and from there in 1949 to the USA. He taught Czech, published as a writer, collaborated with Radio Free Europe . Recent years he wrote in English.

In 1974, the writer’s widow established a prize in his name.

As a writer in the early years he was influenced by expressionism . At home, Khostovsky’s books were banned until the velvet revolution .
