Electrified Lines

Latvian Railways electrification scheme for 2017.

Latvian electrified railways are the longest in the Baltic States, their total length is 249 km (another 12 km are not used). Electrified at a direct current of 3 kV . [12]

Electrification was begun by the head of the North-Western District of the Ministry of Railways of the Ministry of Railways, Nil Ivanovich Krasnobaev . In 1950, electric trains began to run on the Riga-Dubulti line, and then the lines to ( Aizkraukle ), Skulte , Jelgava were electrified.

As of 2014, there are 4 electrified lines that run the electric trains ER2 / ER2T / ER2M.

  • 1 line: Tornakalns - Tukums II 65 km long. Today it is the busiest route of electric trains, in the summertime the traffic interval is 10-15 minutes, since this route runs through Jurmala , which attracts a large number of tourists. The diesel train to Ventspils previously followed the same line. The line was electrified in 1966 .

Stations and stops (24): Tornakalns , Zasulauks , Depot , Zolitude , Imanta , Babite , Priedayne , Lielupe , Bulduri , Dzintari , Majori , Dubulti , Jaundubulti , Pumpuri , Melluzi , Asari , Vaivari , Sloka , Smurde , Kemderi Milzkalne , Tukums I , Tukums II .

  • 2 line: Riga - Jelgava 43 km long. The shortest branch of the electric train. It runs through the city of Olaine. A diesel train to Liepaja follows this line, previously there was a Riga - Renge flight. The line was electrified in 1972 .

Stations and stopping points (13): Riga , Tornakalns , Atgazene , Augstskol Turiba , Tirana , Baloži , Jaunolaine , Olaine , Dalbe , Price , Ozolnieki , Tsukurfabrika , Jelgava .

  • 3 line: Zemitany - Skulte with a length of 52 km. Passenger traffic is small, but increases significantly during the holiday season. It passes through the settlements: Carnikava , Gauja, Garciems , Lilaste, Saulkrasti , Zvejniekciems. Previously, a diesel train went to Limbazi , Aloi and Ruien along this line. In 1957 it was electrified to Mangali station, in 1971 - to Zvejniekciems, fully electrified in 1991 .

Stations and stops (20): Riga , Zemitans , Brasa , Sarkandaugava , Mangali , Ziemelblazma , Vecdaugava , Vecaki , Kalngale , Garciems , Garupe , Tsarnikava , Gauja , Lilaste , Inchupe , Pabazhi , Saulkrasti , Kisupe , Zvejnieci .

  • 4th line: Riga - Aizkraukle . The longest electrified line (82.5 km). It passes through the satellite city of Riga Salaspils , Ogre , and then through the cities of Lielvarde and Aizkraukle . Diesel trains in Gulbene , Krustpils , Rezekne , Zilupe and Daugavpils , as well as international trains to Moscow, St. Petersburg and Minsk, follow this line. The line was electrified in 1972 .

Stations and stops (24): Riga , Wagon Parks , Yanavarty , Daugmale , Shkirotava , Gaysma , Rumbula , Darzini , Dole , Salaspils , Saulkalne , Ikskile , Jaunogre , Ogre , Parogre , Tsiyupe , Kegums , Lielvardela , Kairab , Kayb , Skriveri , Muldakmens , Aizkraukle .

Not built

In addition to the four above, it was planned to electrify two more lines:

  • Riga - Sigulda , 53 km long. According to the plan, the electrification of this entire line was supposed to be completed in 1991. However, by the time of the declaration of independence of Latvia, they managed to bring electrification only to the Ropazi station (now Garkalne ). In the 1980s and 90s, electric trains followed this route to the Ropazhi station. Experimentally, battery-powered trains were launched, which went to Ropazhi on electricity, and followed autonomously to Sigulda; the same principle was used on the line in Limbazi. In the mid-90s, the electrified site was reduced to Jugla (10.2 km long). Until now, you can see the pillars that once held the contact network to Garkalne station.
Stations and stopping points (12): Riga , Zemitan , Chiekurkalns , Jugla , Baltezers , Garkalne , Krievupe , Vangazi , Incukalns , Eglupe , Silciems, Sigulda . Now in Sigulda and further (to Cesis, Valmiera and Valka) a diesel train follows.
  • Riga - Erglie 97.5 km long. Proof of the planned electrification of this branch is a short contact network that leads to the Yanawarta platform, from where the motorway to Erglie followed. Currently, this railway line is almost completely dismantled.
Stations and stops (24): Riga , Wagon Parks , Yanavarty , Riga-Prechu , Atsone , Saurieshi , Tsekule , Kivuli , Bayari , Kangari , Remine , Augstsiems , Karde , Sidgunda , Suntazi , Castrane , Watrane , Kapenepu , Plater , Taiter , Lichupe , Baltava , Roplaini , Ergli .

Electrification Plans

For 2015-2020, it is planned to implement the project for electrification of railways:

  • Aizkraukle - Krustpils
  • Krustpils - Rezekne
  • Krustpils - Daugavpils
  • Krustpils - Jelgava
  • Jelgava - Tukums 2
  • Tukums 2 - Ventspils
