Night is tender

The action takes place in Europe. A young talented American psychiatrist, Dick Diver, working during the First World War in a clinic in Switzerland , falls in love with a patient named Nicole and marries her. Nicole came from a very wealthy family, and relatives took the marriage without optimism. Dick for a long time after discharge from the hospital, Nicole has to combine two roles - a husband and a doctor. He built a mansion on the banks of the Riviera , where the couple led a secluded life. Soon their children were born. Dick himself was a very lively and active, intelligent person with a bunch of friends who often visited him at his house. In the late 1920s, an eighteen-year-old American actress Rosemary came to the hotel near the Divers House. Dick and Rosemary immediately fell in love, but they did not succeed in love, and Rosemary leaves for the filming of the next film. Four years have passed. During this time, Dick, together with Dr. Franz, founded a psychiatric hospital (with Nicole's money), and Rosemary became a real beauty, behind whom there are already many novels. They meet in Rome when Dick returned from a trip to the United States for his father’s funeral. The lovers spent several days together, but again parted for a long time. Dick begins a series of failures: he is arrested in Rome, then, upon arrival home, discord begins in a psychiatric hospital, and Dick leaves her; makes you aware of yourself age. Dick starts to drink. He is no longer called to parties, the discord begins in work. When Rosemary and Dick meet for the third time, Nicole, suspecting a relationship between them, makes a lover and marries him after a divorce. Fitzgerald began work on the work in 1925; the design and title of a future book underwent significant changes several times. A manuscript of several chapters of the first version of the novel has been preserved, in which the protagonist Francis Melarkey, a Hollywood sound engineer, travels with his mother across Europe. On the Riviera, they get acquainted with a company of wealthy compatriots, Melarca falls under their influence and eventually kills his mother.

In the summer of 1929, the writer began writing the second version, putting into action Rosemary Hoyt and her mother, who meet on the ocean liner Hollywood director Levellina Kelly and his wife Nicole. Two chapters in the manuscript have been preserved from this version. The creation of the third option began in 1932, Fitzgerald developed a plan of the novel, outlined the duration of the action, the age of the characters, the main plot points, including the motive of mental disorder Nicole. The novel was completed by the end of 1933 and then received its final name. The work was published in Scribner's Magazine in January - April 1934.

Following critics' remarks that the novel’s chosen structure violates its logical and chronological sequence, Fitzgerald proposed Scribner’s publishing house to revise the book in December 1938, but did not complete this work. A copy of the novel has survived with the author’s pencil notes, following which the famous critic and friend of Fitzgerald rebuilt the novel. This version of the work was published in 1951.

In 1962, a film was filmed, with Jason Robards and Jennifer Jones in the lead roles. The film of the same name was nominated for the 1962 Oscar in the nomination "Best Song".
