History
The car was designed at the end of 1977 and became the first Formula 1 car, which fully implemented the principle of ground effect .
The designers managed to solve the problem with rarefaction of air, which was in the Lotus 78 chassis. For this, the design of the Venturi tunnels was redesigned, which made it possible to more evenly distribute the air pressure under the bottom of the car. The rear shock absorbers were hidden from the air flow closer to the gearbox, and the exhaust pipes were lifted and integrated into the side pontoons. At the same time, the fuel tanks were removed from the sides and placed inside the chassis directly behind the cockpit. This not only improved the weight distribution, the car got more efficient aerodynamics, because the side pontoons 79 created more downforce than the Lotus 78 .
Slightly reducing the effectiveness of the rear wing, along with other improvements, Lotus engineers not only achieved their goal, maintaining full downforce, but also reduced aerodynamic drag.
In fact, the Lotus 79 possessed about 15% more efficient aerodynamics than the 78 . The car literally stuck to the track and allowed to take turns at a higher speed [1] .
