The triumph of the Blessed Virgin Mary ( Latin: In Sollemnitate Sanctae Dei Genetricis Mariae ) is a Catholic holiday dedicated to the Virgin Mary . Celebrated annually on January 1 . It has the highest status in the gradation of holidays - triumph . Included in the number of “obligatory” holidays, when a visit to the Mass is required. The triumph of the Blessed Virgin Mary completes the Octave of Christmas . On this day, the Catholic Church also remembers the Circumcision of the Lord .
The feast dedicated to the Virgin Mary was celebrated on January 1 in Rome and a number of regions of the West as early as the VI century. In the XIII and XIV centuries in the Latin calendar the feast of the Circumcision of the Lord supplanted the Mother of God on January 1. In 1570, Pope Pius V distributed the festival of Circumcision, as a must, throughout the Catholic Church.
In 1914, in Portugal , the feast of the Motherhood of the Blessed Virgin was established, celebrated on October 11 . In 1931, it was extended to the entire Church. In 1974, during the reform of the liturgical calendar, Paul VI canceled the holiday on October 11 and established the Triumph of the Blessed Virgin Mary on January 1.
Traditionalist Catholics continue to celebrate the Circumcision of the Lord on January 1, and celebrate the Feast of the Motherhood of the Virgin on October 11.
