Extraction began in 1924 and was discontinued in 1972. For the cessation of mining, there were reasons: the coal mining process was extremely time-consuming and expensive. The coal mined first had to be brought to shore. Then it was loaded onto small boats and brought to an anchored cargo ship at that time. The construction of the port was impossible, due to the harsh ice and shallow shore conditions.
Mining was only possible in the winter months, as in the warmer months of the year, melting ice flooded everything.
In 2005, a large chunk came off the glacier, and a tidal wave swept the city, which penetrated 250 meters further from the village, the destroyed buildings were carried ashore.
Greenland Prime Minister Kuupik Kleist was born in Kullissat .
