History

The magazine appeared in 1913 when Conde Nast acquired the men's fashion magazine Dress . “Costume”) and renamed it Dress and Vanity Fair (“Costume and Vanity Fair”). In the same year, the first four issues were published under this name. After a short period of inactivity, the magazine began to appear as Vanity Fair . He gained wide popularity under the leadership of . In 1919, Robert Benchley [2] , who hired the future playwright Robert Sherwood , joined the editorial staff. Croninshield drew the best writers of his time to the magazine: Aldous Huxley , Thomas Eliot , Ferenc Molnar , Gertrude Stein , William Sibrook , June Barnes [3] .

By 1915, more advertising was published on the pages of Vanity Fair than on the pages of any other US magazine [4] . However, the Great Depression led to a drop in advertising offers, despite the fact that the print runs reached a peak of 90 thousand copies. In 1935, Conde Nast announced that Vanity Fair ceases to exist and merges with Vogue [5] .

In June 1981, it was announced that Condé Nast Publications was resuming publication of the magazine [6] . The first issue appeared in February 1983. Its editor was Richard Locke of The New York Times Book Review [7] .

Since 1993, the magazine began to publish on the last page of its issues the answers of famous people to the so-called “ Proust questionnaire ”, and in 2009 published the most noteworthy answers in the form of a book [8] [9] .
