The cross is the field where the king of the strongest side must stand during the mate.
The black dot is a field where the king of the weaker side can be mated.
To checkmate two elephants, it is necessary that the following conditions be met:
- elephants are of different genders - one of them must move in the white fields, and the other in black fields. Two or more same-sex elephants (resulting from the transformation of pawns) cannot be mated.
- when mating the king of the strongest side is at a distance of the knight's move from the angular field.
- A mat can be forced [1] only on 12 fields: a1, a2, a7, a8, b1, b8, g1, g8, h1, h2, h7, h8.

When mating with two elephants, beware of stalemate positions. Such a danger arises when a lone king is pushed back to the edge of the board.
