Biography

Adeloald was born in Monza in 602. He was the son of the Lombard king Aguulfa . It was baptized on April 7, 603, by the Roman Trent second from Trento , which is why the Arians hardly recognized the power of the new ruler [1] . In 604 he was crowned according to Roman traditions. Adeloald married the daughter of King of Australia Theodebert II .

After the death of his father in 616, due to the early childhood of Adeloald, his mother, Theodelinda , became regent. The army was entrusted to the command of the Duke of Sundrarit , the military commander and the close king Aguulf. Shortly after ascending the throne of Adeloald, the Lombards defeated the Byzantines severely, forcing them to pay tribute. Later, in the years 616–617, the Lombards stopped paying tribute to the Franks .

Adeloald and his mother pursued a determined religious policy. The country was divided into two language zones: Latin and Germanic, as well as three religious: Catholic, pagan and Arian. Theodelinda, along with her son, tried in vain to convert the Lombards to Catholicism .

Soon, Adeloald began to show signs of a mental disorder. Its inability to control the state caused discontent of the Lombard nobility. In the year 625 or 626, in the tenth year of rule, Adeloald and his mother were overthrown as a result of a conspiracy. Reliably nothing is known about their future fate. Historical sources of Byzantine origin report that Adeloald, after overthrow from the throne, fled to Ravenna , where he died in 626. The new king of the Lombards was the Duke of Turin Arioald , married to the daughter of Agilulf and Theodelinda Gundeberg .
