European Men's Handball Championship 2010

The 2010 European Handball Championship for Men was held in Austria from January 19 to January 31, 2010 . This is the ninth tournament in a row.

The tournament is qualifying for the 2011 World Cup . Three best teams get directly to the championship (except for Sweden and France, already qualified there as a host country and a reigning champion). The remaining eleven, already after the competition, will play butt matches with teams that did not make it to the European Championship.

The French team that won the tournament became the one-time holder of all the top handball titles: the 2008 Olympic Games champion , the reigning world and European champions.

Competitions were held in five stadiums:

  • Vienna - Wiener Stadthalle (11,000 people)
  • Wiener Neustadt - Arena Nova (5000 people)
  • Graz - Stadthalle Graz (5000 people)
  • Innsbruck - Olympiaworth Innsbruck (10,000 people)
  • Linz - Intersport Arena (6000 people)

Qualification

For the first time in the qualification, all teams except the host country ( Austria ) and the current champion ( Denmark ) were to take part in the European Handball Championship. All other countries were divided into six groups of five teams and one by six and held butt games with each other. The first and second places went to the European champion.

The qualifying draw took place on April 18, 2008 . Matches were held from October 29, 2008 to June 21, 2009 .

Initially, the teams of Georgia and Moldova should have participated in the qualification, placed in the 1st and 3rd groups, respectively, but later they refused to participate.
