Early Years and Education

Natalie Portman was born on June 9, 1981 in Jerusalem [12] [13] , in the family of Avner Herschlag and Shelley Stevens. The father of the actress is a specialist in the treatment of infertility and reproductive endocrinology , a professor at the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Hofstra Medical School ( Hofstra North Shore - Long Island Jewish School of Medicine at Hofstra University , USA, New York ), a graduate of the Hadassah School of Medicine, Hebrew University of Jerusalem [14] [15] . Mother is a former housewife, and now agent is Natalie [14] . The ancestors of the actress on the maternal side are Jews from the Russian Empire and Austria-Hungary (they immigrated to the United States from Kavsky and changed their surname from Edelstein to Stevens ), and on the paternal side - from Romania and Poland [16] . Her paternal grandfather, Natalie, whose parents died in Auschwitz , was a professor of economics in Israel, and her great-grandmother of Romanian descent was a British intelligence operative during World War II [16] [17] . The stage name “Portman” is the surname of the actress’s ancestors by her maternal grandmother, Bernice Stevens (nee Gurvich, 1924–2014) [18] [19] [20] .

Portman's parents met at a Jewish student center at Ohio State University , where her mother sold tickets. They began to correspond after the father returned to Israel, and a few years later his mother came to him and they got married. When Natalie was three years old, the family moved from Israel to the United States , where the girl’s father could improve their skills [21] . They first lived in Washington , where the actress attended ’s and learned to speak Hebrew , but in 1988 they moved to Connecticut and finally settled in Long Island , New York , in 1990 [22] ] . Natalie Portman has dual citizenship - the United States and Israel [23] . On this occasion, she said the following: “I love the United States very much, but my heart is in Jerusalem - there I feel at home” [16] .

From the age of four, Natalie studied dancing and performed with local troupes. The actress attended ’s Jewish elementary day in Glen Cove , New York , and graduated from High [22] . In 1998, while studying in high school, the actress became a co-author (along with scientists Ian Hurley and Jonathan Woodward) of a research work on the topic “Enzymatic Generation of Hydrogen ”, which gave her the opportunity to participate in , where she went to the semifinals [24] [25] [26] . In June 2003, Natalie became a Harvard graduate with a bachelor's degree in psychology [27] . “I'm not worried if college is ruining my career. I’d rather be educated than a movie star, ”she said in an interview with the New York Post [28] . In addition to her two native languages - Hebrew and English - Natalie studied French [29] , German [30] , Japanese [29] and Arabic [31] .

Career

First Roles

Portman spent all of her vacations at the . At the age of 10, Natalie participated in the casting for the play About a girl about to commit murder in order to get the main role in the school production, and was chosen as an understudy by Laura Bell Bundy [32] . When the girl was 10 years old, a Revlon agent suggested she become a model , but she refused, because she wanted to concentrate on acting [22] [33] . In an interview with one of the magazines, Portman said: “I was different from other children. I was more ambitious, I knew what I like and what I want, and worked hard. I was a very serious child. ” [34]

In 1993, Natalie auditioned for Luc Besson’s film “Leon” ( French: Léon ), where she played her first major role, a girl named Matilda , who is friends with the hit man Leon ( Jean Reno ). Soon after receiving the role, the actress took the pseudonym “Portman” for the sake of secrecy, but on the DVD with the director's version of the film she is mentioned in the credits as Natalie Hershlag [22] [35] . The film was released on November 18, 1994 and generally received positive reviews [36] . Thus, her debut in feature films took place when she was only 13 years old.

In the same year, Natalie appeared in the short television movie as Nina , the daughter of a woman with lung cancer named Bree (Lauren Cohn) [37] .

Career Development

In 1995, Portman played in the movie " Fight " with Al Pacino and Robert De Niro . She appeared in the role of Lauren Gustafson , the adopted daughter of the protagonist. Although the film did not receive any awards, it was noted by critics and became commercially successful.

In 1996, three films with the participation of Natalie were released immediately. The first was the role of Marty in the melodrama " Beautiful Girls " - a film about the life and relationships of former classmates. Then came the role of Laura Dendridge in Woody Allen ’s musical “ Everyone Says I Love You .” The third was the movie Mars Attacks! "- a fantastic comedy by Tim Burton about an attempt to capture the planet by the Martians. Here Natalie was played by Taffy Dale , the daughter of the US president. Portman was supposed to get the lead role in the movie Romeo + Juliet , but director Baz Lurmann decided that she was too small and the role went to Claire Danes [33] .

Natalie played a major role in the Broadway production of Anne Frank 's Diary (1997) based on a real- life diary of a Jewish girl , which she kept during the Nazi occupation of the Netherlands .

First Nominations

In May 1999, George Lucas's film Star Wars. Episode I. The Phantom Menace ” with Portman as Padme Amidala , Queen of the Planet of Naboo . Before filming, Natalie had not seen the previous films of the series. Although in technical nominations the picture claimed the Oscar , in general it received mixed reviews from critics and was nominated for seven Golden Raspberry awards , including the nomination for the worst screen pair (Natalie Portman and Jake Lloyd ). However, the film grossed $ 924.3 million worldwide and became the ninth highest-grossing film.

It is also interesting that the role of Sabe , the servant of Padme Amidala, appearing in her image to protect the queen, was played by Keira Knightley , who looks very much like Natalie Portman. Sabe's phrases in the film were duplicated by Natalie's voice. Even the mothers of these two actresses could not distinguish one from the other when they were in makeup [38] . Prior to this role, Keira Knightley played inconspicuous roles in series and on television. Thus, the role of Sabe became her first in a big movie, and she got it solely due to the outward resemblance to Natalie Portman. Therefore, Natalie influenced, albeit indirectly, on Kira’s career [39] .

In September of that year, Natalie appeared in the drama “ Anywhere, Not Here .” She played Anne August , a girl whose views on life are different from her mother's plans ( Susan Sarandon ). For this role, Portman was nominated for the Young Actor and Golden Globe Award (Best Supporting Actress) [40] . The critic Mary Elizabeth Williams called the actress “amazing” and noted that she “unlike other actresses of her age, is not too sentimental and not too courageous” [41] . At first, she refused to play a major role in this film, as the original version of the script provided for a sexual scene with Natalie. But before filming began, Susan Sarandon told the producers that she would not star in the film if Natalie Portman did not play the role of her daughter. Therefore, she, along with director Wayne Wang, demanded a revision of the script, which was done, and Natalie joined the project [22] .

Natalie also played in the movie Where the Heart Is (2000). Her heroine, a 17-year-old pregnant girl Novalie Nation , remains alone in a foreign city, without a livelihood and people who can help her, and decides to start her life anew. For this role, Natalie was nominated for the Young Actor and Teen Choice Awards and won the Young Star Awards.

Studying at the University

After filming in the film “Where the Heart Is,” Portman entered the Department of Psychology at Harvard University [22] . In an interview, she stated that over the next four years she would not be filming anywhere except Star Wars in order to concentrate on her studies [42] . Natalie helped the famous American lawyer Alan Dershowitz in his research, which was noted in his book “The case of Israel” [43] . Portman’s response to an anti-Israeli essay published in the university newspaper was considered to be written quite well [44] . In 2002, Natalie co-authored a research paper entitled “ Frontal Lobe Activation During Object Permanence” [45] [46] .

The scientific work of Portman made her one of the few actresses with a certain Erdoшаs-Bacon number (she has it 5 + 2 = 7, see also Erdoшаs number ) - this is a semi-joke method based on theories of a tight world and six handshakes , which determines the minimum total number connections through scientific works and roles in films that separate a certain person, respectively, from the Hungarian mathematician Paul Erdös and the American actor Kevin Bacon . In 2003, the actress graduated from Harvard with a bachelor's degree in psychology. In the spring of 2004, Portman studied at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem [32] . In March 2006, she gave a lecture at Columbia University on the topic of countering terrorism, telling, in particular, about the film “V stands for Vendetta” [47] .

During her studies, Natalie did not stop acting. From June to September 2000, she participated in the filming of Star Wars. Episode II. Attack of the Clones ” , held in Sydney , as well as in Spain , Italy and Tunisia . Released on May 16, 2002, the film, like the previous one in the series, did not receive wide acclaim from critics. This time Portman was nominated for two Golden Raspberry awards (the worst female supporting role and worst screen pair), but at the same time, the actress received a Saturn nomination and won the Teen Choice Awards .

In July 2001, Natalie played Nina in a play based on the play by A.P. Chekhov “The Seagull” at the Theater in Central Park . Meryl Streep , Kevin Kline and Philip Seymour Hoffman were also involved in this production of Mike Nichols [22] [48] . In the same year, she became one of many celebrities who appeared in minor roles in Ben Stiller ’s comedy “Model Male” . Portman also played a small role in Anthony Minghella 's Cold Mountain military drama with Nicole Kidman and Jude Law .

Subsequent work

The film was widely recognized by critics, participated in the Sundance Film Festival and received the Independent Spirit Award for best debut film, and Natalie was nominated for two MTV Movie Awards and four Teen Choice Awards for this role. Then came the role of Alice in Mike Nichols ’s film "Intimacy . " Alice Aires is a young stripper who has just arrived in London from America. At the end of the year, the premiere of the film "V means Vendetta" with Portman in the main female role. The tape is based on the eponymous dystopian graphic novel by Alan Moore . The action takes place in 2038, in which Britain is a totalitarian state. In the story, the heroine Natalie, a girl named Ivy Hammond , is arrested for anti-government activities, so the actress had to shave her head [52] . Regarding her new haircut, Natalie said: "The drastic irreversible changes are always interesting, and that is what gave me the courage." Natalie also specifically engaged in a stage speech teacher, learning to speak with a British accent [53] . For the role of Ivy, the actress has been nominated for the Saturn and Teen Choice Awards for the umpteenth time . The lead singer noted the political importance of the film and mentioned that the main character, who recruits Ivy to the members of the anti-government group, often does bad things that the audience doesn't like. Natalie wanted to play this role, because, being a citizen of Israel, she sees the problems of terrorism and violence as extremely urgent. The actress also said that the film does not draw any clear and precise conclusions, leaving this right to the audience [54] .

In the film almanac “Paris, I Love You” (2006), Natalie played in the fragment “Faubourg Saint-Denis”. Her character, a girl named Francine , a future actress, falls in love with a blind man named Thomas (Cupronickel Beslon). In May 2007, Wong Karwai ’s film “My Blueberry Nights” with Portman in one of the secondary roles opened the competition program of the 60th Cannes Film Festival . Heroine Natalie - Leslie , a girl player, accustomed to bluffing and therefore considering the message about the imminent death of her father another lie. When it turns out that her father really died, she feels guilty for not believing. This role Portman received high marks from critics, because, according to Richard Corliss , “this time she plays not a street girl or a child princess, but a mature, inclined woman, and the actress can no longer use her attractive appearance for the good in the frame ". In the same year, Natalie voiced Bart Simpson's girlfriend Darcy in the episode "The Little Big Girl " of the 18th season of The Simpsons . In September 2010, the Black Swan was released by Darren Aronofsky (premiered in Russia in February 2011). In it, Portman played a ballerina, whose desire to get a role in the ballet "Swan Lake" develops into an obsession. To prepare for this role, she had to train from 5 to 8 hours every day for 6 months and lose weight by 9 kilograms [62] . However, in the end, most of the stage productions were performed by Sarah Lane, a prima ballerina of the American Ballet Theater with 22 years of experience. According to Lane herself, Portman is an amazing actress, but in a year and a half it is absolutely impossible to achieve the level of professionalism that was required to perform extremely difficult scenes in the film even for experienced ballerinas [63] .

In January 2011, Natalie received the Golden Globe Award for Best Actress for her role in this film. And in February 2011 she received an Oscar in the same category. After receiving the Oscar for Portman, a dispute arose over who performed most of the dance on stage in the film [64] . Sarah Lane claimed that Natalie performed only 5% of the dance. In addition, the ballerina said that the filmmakers asked her not to talk about it until the award ceremony takes place [65] . Director Aronofsky defended the actress, insisting that Portman performed 80% of the dance [65] .

January 21, 2011 the romantic comedy “ More Than Sex ” was released. The company actress was Ashton Kutcher . The picture gathered a good cash register, having paid back the production budget several times [66] . The actress herself admitted that she does not like to star in romantic comedies, explaining the desire to star in this film by the fact that he is not like all the other films of this genre [68] .

The next acting work of Natalie was again the comedy " Brave Pepper ", the world premiere of which was held on April 8, 2011, and on May 12 the picture was released in Russia. In the same year, Portman could be seen in the musical drama Voice of Lux , where she played the role of the famous singer, who in her childhood witnessed the massacre, which left an imprint on her entire subsequent life.
