Biography
Philip Howard was the eldest son of the 4th Duke of Norfolk Thomas Howard , the second cousin of Queen Elizabeth I Tudor . Philip Howard was baptized in Whitehall Palace , the residence of the English kings, and was named after his godfather, the Spanish king Philip II . In 1571, at the age of 14, he was engaged to his adoptive sister, Anna Dacre. October 1, 1569 his father was arrested and accused of intrigue against the royal court. Thomas Howard was executed in 1572, and the title "Duke of Norfolk" was confiscated and not transferred to his son. In 1580, despite the conviction of his father, Philip was allowed to inherit the title of Count Arundel after the death of his mother.
All of Philip's relatives were Catholics and, therefore, during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I, they tried to leave England without her permission. April 25, 1585 Philip Howard was arrested and imprisoned in the Tower . Although Philip Howard’s treason charges were not proven, he spent 10 years in prison, right up to his death from dysentery . During his imprisonment, he asked the queen to allow him to see his wife and son . The queen set him a condition that only by joining the Anglican Church , he would be able to see his relatives. Refusing to offer the queen, Philip condemned himself to solitude in prison.
After his death in England, a cult of veneration as a martyr immediately arose. His body was buried in the church of St.. Peter without any honors and ceremonies. After 29 years, his widow and son received permission from King James I to transfer the body of Philip Howard to the Catholic church in Arundel , which is still a place of pilgrimage for British Catholics.
