Early years
Roy Williamson was born in 1936 in Edinburgh. His mother played the piano. At school, he learned by ear to play the recorder . When the teacher found out about this, he kicked him out of music lessons. He went to Wester Elchies, then to Aberlour House and Gordonstoun. He studied sailing at Burghead, and then went to Edinburgh College of Art, where he met Ronnie Brown in 1955. They played together for over thirty years.
TV success
A year later they appeared on television. Roy Williamson and Ronnie Brown were drawing teachers, Smith was an architect, and Bell was a secretary. In 1964, they were opening for The Dubliners when they played at the Asher Hall in Edinburgh .
Combines
Williamson was able to handle wood well. In the summer of 1969, he invented the "combiners", two tools, each of which consisted of several tools assembled together. The first was a duet of mandolin and guitar .
