Creativity
In 1980, Taylor went to Africa, on a journey that had a strong influence on his work and career. This trip taught Taylor how to handle improvised materials and the importance of using elements of humor in art. After returning to the United States, financial need, combined with what he learned in Africa, prompted Taylor to create “constructions” from improvised means. These new works were exhibited at his first gallery exhibition in 1986.
Taylor did not see the difference between his three-dimensional works and drawings, avoided the term “ sculpture ” for his designs , considering them to be something like “drawings in space”. Taylor assembled his work from non-traditional materials (including elements such as broomsticks, wire, carpentry waste and other items found) into delicate designs that involved many points of view.
