Description
The park was founded in 1976. Translated from Dene (see Chipevian (language) ), "Nahanni" means "soul." There are four canyons above the South Nahanni River : First, Second, Third and Fourth. The river is known for its 90-meter -high Virginia Falls, twice the height of Niagara Falls . In the territory of the park there are sulfur thermal springs, tundra , mixed forests of spruce and poplar , as well as minor tuffs (deposits of calcium carbonate ). In 1978, the park became a UNESCO World Heritage Site .
Extension
On June 9, 2009, the Canadian government, with Dehcho of the First Nation (an organization representing the denis of the Northwest Territories of Canada), announced legislation that would increase the area of the Nahanni National Park by more than six times. In the future, the park will be 30,000 km² , including 91% of the Nahanni Great Ecosystem in Deschaux and most of the South Nahanni watershed. The parked area is estimated to be home to approximately 500 grizzly bears , two herds of forest caribou , as well as several varieties of alpine sheep and goats. Here are the highest mountains and the largest glaciers of the Northwest Territories.
