Towards the end of the reign of the Samanids, Abd al-Malik I ( 954 - 961 ) was appointed vizier and held the same post under the next ruler, Mansur I ibn Nuh (961 - 976 ). His appointment came under the influence of Hajib Alp-tegin . By agreement between Alp-tegin and the Bal'ami, each of them should consider himself a deputy ( naib ) of the other. Bal'ami at that time did not do anything without consulting Alp-tegin. After accession to the throne of Mansur, he apparently renounced Alp-tegin, since after the fall of the latter he managed to maintain his position. According to McDeady, he was first deposed, and then again appointed vizier.

In 963, he wrote the Persian treatment of the world history of Muhammad at-Tabari - the oldest historical work in the New Persian language . According to Gardisi , he died in the month of Jumad II, 363 years of Hijra (February 27 - March 27, 974), as a vezir. However, according to Utby , he was again appointed vizier in 992 under Nuha II (976–997). In the same year, he resigned, because he did not feel able to cope with difficult circumstances - the Samanids at that time were in danger from the Karakhanid princes- Ileks , in whose power even the capital of Bukhara was in power. Utby does not report the date of his death.
