Biography
Jules de Broeiker was born and spent his childhood on the Jan Breudelstraat street in the historical center of Ghent, next to the Castle of the Counts of Flanders. His family ran a small business. His artistic talent manifested itself at an early age and he began to study painting at the Academy of Fine Arts. When his father died four years later, he stopped attending art classes and joined the family business. After a nine-year break, de Broeiker entered the Ghent Academy again. His teachers were Theo Canell, Louis Tiggadt and Jean Delvin. For the first time, de Breuiker exhibited his works at the Ghent Salon in 1903. Then the government bought his watercolor "Rag Market" (Voddenmarkt). From 1906 he began working in the technique of etching. In 1914–1919, de Broeiker lived in London , after which he returned to Gent.
Creativity
Jules de Broyker was born in Ghent, and this city became an important object of his work. De Bruyker repeatedly depicted cityscapes and architectural monuments, in particular - the Church of St. Nicholas and the Castle of the Counts of Flanders , near which he lived in childhood. A series of etchings with images of the cathedrals of Flanders and France testifies to his interest in architecture.
At the same time, the work of De Broeker focuses on poor "little" people. The heroes of his work were the poor, the elderly, the street children, as well as the environment of their daily life - poor areas, flea markets.
