Ubrus ( senior glory. ѹбрѹсъ - “board, scarf, towel”, from St. Glory. brasnѫti, brysati - “rub” ) - the image of the canvas in icon painting and monumental temple painting [1] [2] .
“The Savior on the Ubrus” is one of two types of Jesus Christ's iconography “The Savior Not Made by Hands ”, in which the face of the Savior is depicted against the background of the Ubrus - a light towel (the second type is “The Savior on the cranium”). Sometimes called the image itself.
In the system of temple painting, ubrus (towels) is a picturesque imitation of patterned fabric, used to decorate the lower tiers of walls [3] . Thus, the holy images are above the level of man, the white drapery of the lower tiers is designed to create a feeling of solemnity and purity [4] . In this case, the lower, most damaged, part of the painting can be updated without much difficulty. Another way to design the lower levels of the walls is marble (in Byzantium, Baroque architecture) and stone-painted walls ( marble ) [5] .
