Life

Wilhelm Blasius was the second son of the zoologist Johann Heinrich Blasius in Braunschweig. He studied medicine in Braunschweig, Göttingen and Zurich , graduating in 1868. In 1871, he passed from his father the position of director of the Museum of Natural History and the Braunschweig. In 1872, he became a professor of zoology and botany at the Technical University of Braunschweig . During his work, Blasius devoted himself to the protection of animals and the homeland, as well as to the study of the prehistoric period of Lower Saxony. In 1874, he became secretary of the German Society of Ornithologists . Along with this, Blasius sought to give international respect to the Museum of Natural History in Braunschweig by buying and selling stuffed animals and bird eggs. The most valuable receipts for the museum came primarily from the Philippines , Sulawesi , the Moluccas and Bolivia .

In 1907, William Blasius participated in the 7. International Zoological Congress in Boston .

On May 31, 1912, after a long illness, he died. The tombstone is in the Cemetery .

The most famous works of Blasius include a monograph on the wingless eider , published in 1903. In addition, Blasius described several taxa.

William Blasius was a member of Leopoldina and a corresponding member of the American Union of Ornithologists . In 1892, Blasius was awarded the degree of Doctor of Science at the University of Padua .
