Biography
Jesse Douglas was born in New York , attended Columbia University in 1916-1920, where he received a PhD in 1920 ( On Certain Two-Point Properties of General Families of Curves; The Geometry of Variations ).
From 1920 to 1926 he taught at Columbia College ( Columbia College ).
In 1936, at the 10th International Congress of Mathematicians , the Fields Prize was first awarded, and Douglas was one of its two laureates; the prize was awarded to him for solving the Plateau problem in 1930, posed by Joseph Louis Lagrange in 1760.
Jesse Douglas also made a significant contribution to solving the inverse problem of Lagrange mechanics. In 1943, the American Mathematical Society awarded him the M. Boher Prize .
Jesse Douglas later became a professor at New York City College , where he worked until his death.
