Biography

In 1045, Emperor Henry III temporarily transferred the margrave of Antwerp to Baudouin. Early, Baudouin’s father, Baudown V, lost him during the war with Henry. In 1051, Baudouin married at the insistence of his father Richard , Countess Hainaut , widow of Count Hermann . Despite the protest of the emperor, Baudouin took possession of the county, as well as the county of Mons , the Valenciennes graffiti, and the southern part of the Brabant landgraph at that time. Because of their close kinship, the couple were excommunicated by the bishop of Cambrai Engelbert, but then Pope Leo IX agreed to the marriage. Two of Richard’s children from Hermann were deprived of their father’s legacy; his son Roger in 1066 became the bishop of Chalon-sur-Marne , and his daughter went to the monastery.

After the death of his father in 1067, Baudouin VI united Flanders and Hainaut, where he reigned for three years until his death in 1070 . As Count Hainaut, Baudouin recognized between 1066 and 1070 the guild in Valenciennes. He restored the abbey of Anon, where he was subsequently buried. The beginning of his reign was marked by the founding of Grammont Abbey ( Geraardsbergen ), which received benefits in 1068 .

Knowing that he was ill, Baudouin convened a council in Oudenaarde , at which he decided to put two young sons, Arnulf and Baudouin, under the care of the mother, and in the event of the death of one of his sons, the other should inherit him. Before his death, he managed to transfer his lands to his eldest son Arnulf III. He also asked his brother Robert the Frisian to protect his children. He died shortly thereafter, on July 17, 1070 .

The reign of Baudouin VI marked itself as a period of inner and outer world. Despite all the precautions, Baudouin’s early death gave birth to dynastic disputes. Already on February 22, 1071, Arnulf was killed in a fight with his uncle Robert of Frisian at the Battle of Kassel along with Count Hereford William Fitz-Osbern [1] , and Robert usurped power in Flanders. The younger son, Baudouin II, became Count Hainaut after the death of Arnulf.

Marriage and Children

Wife (from 1051 ): Richard de Hainault (died March 15, 1087 , Mesin, buried in the Anon Abbey), widow of Count Hainault Hermann . Children from this marriage:

  2. ↑ Perhaps a nun in a Benedictine monastery mentioned in Annales Hanoniæ . In 1071 Arnulf III is named in the documents by his sister.
