Grechcho ( ital. Greccio ) - municipality (village) in Italy , in the Lazio region, is part of the province of Rieti . According to a local legend, on December 25, 1223 , Francis of Assisi gave Greccio the first ever cave performance : he established a nursery in the Catholic Christmas Eve of 1223, and real people and animals got the role of evangelical characters.

Geography
Grechcho is located 70 km north of the capital of Italy - Rome and 12 km north-west of Rieti . Population - 1529 people. (2008). The peak of the population was reached around 1931 (2036 people).
History
It was first mentioned in the annals under the name of Grezzo in the 11th century, when a settlement of dependent peasants arose around this knight’s castle in this place. Only one tower has survived from the castle, and now the bell tower of the local cathedral.
Archangel Michael is honored as the patron saint of the city, celebrating September 29th .
