In the XI century, the ruler of Flanders was a vassal of the king of France and only a small part of his possessions, including Valenciennes , belonged to the Holy Roman Empire . Subsequently, under the control of Count Baudouin V, the son of Count Baudouin IV of Flanders and Ogiva of Luxembourg , daughter of Count Moselgau of Friedrich of Luxembourg , the county of Hainaut and the territory between Scheldt and Dandr also found themselves . In his reign, Baudouin had power equivalent to that of an independent sovereign, having a significant influence on the political affairs of Western Europe .
In 1028, Baudouin V married Adela of France, daughter of the King of France Robert II . After this, Baudouin rebelled against his father, Baudouin IV, provoked by King Robert, standing at the head of the displeased barons. Baudouin IV was even driven out of the county and forced to seek refuge in Normandy . With the strong support of his patron, Duke Robert II of Normandy , he quickly regained the throne of the counts of Flanders and finally crushed the rebellion. After the death of his father, Baudouin V became one of the most powerful vassals of the king of France.
Earl of Thierry IV of Holland disputed the lands of Zealand at the counts of Flanders. In response, Baudouin V invaded Friesland , and emerged victorious from this conflict, retaining Zealand as part of his county. As an ally of the Duke of Lower Lorraine, Gottfried I, Bearded Baudouin took part in the war, which lasted from 1046 to 1056, against the Holy Roman Emperor Henry III . At the beginning of the war, he lost the city of Valenciennes , which passed to Count Eno Hermann .
Together with Thierry IV, Dutch Baudouin V captured the castle in Ghent Enam, and with Godfried I of Lorraine, he even proceeded to the siege of Nijmegen , where the ruler of Alsace Adalbert was killed. However, Baudouin was forced to cease hostilities against the army of the emperor. Later, left without the support of the Allies, Baudouin already alone continued the war. He subjugated Liege and Tyuin , and also destroyed Yui . In response, Henry III sent troops to Flanders. Baldwin resisted them in the Arch , where, according to legend, he dug a wide canal in three nights (currently the Nufoss canal, which is located to the Base). This channel ultimately turned out to be unnecessary, as Henry III, with the support of the former Castellan Cambrai Jean de Bétune, crossed and devastated the possessions of the Count of Flanders. In June 1054, he besieged Tournai , and in 1055, Baudouin V attacked Antwerp , defending Count Moselgau Frederick of Luxembourg.
The death of Emperor Henry III the following year put an end to the conflict. Baudouin was even made in 1056 by the representative of the empire in Cologne . Through peace negotiations in Andernach from 1056 to 1059, he received Ename ( county of Alost ), a castle in Ghent , Vaasland , Quotre Metieux and five islands of Zealand.
When Herman d'Enault died in 1051, Baudouin V married his son Baudouin VI to the widow of Herman Richard . After this, the county of Hainaut merged with the county of Flanders. Baudouin also went to Tournai. Bishop Cambrai Litbert excommunicated the newlyweds from the church , accusing them of close kinship, but Pope Leo IX removed the excommunication a few years later. After the death of Henry III, this marriage was also recognized by the mother of Emperor Henry IV , Agnes de Poitiers , who ruled the empire in the infancy of his son.
From 1060 to 1067, Baudouin V was co-ruler of Anna Yaroslavna . She ruled the kingdom as regent until the age of majority of her son, King of France Philip I , cousin of Baudouin. This earl of Flanders gained a strong influence in pan-European politics.
Baudouin V died on September 1, 1067, and was buried in St. Peter's Church in Lille . His widow, Adela of France, received monastic tonsure at a monastery in Mezen , where she died in 1079.
