This object is listed in the New General Catalog twice, with the designations NGC 1317 and NGC 1318 . It is one of those listed in the original edition of the New General Catalog .

The galaxy is part of the Cluster of the Oven , it has been absorbed by the neighboring spiral galaxy NGC 1316 for 1 million years [1] , which contains the bright radio source Oven A.
