By 1913, freight traffic on the Prussian railways had grown so much that new, more powerful steam locomotives were required. This need is even greater in 1914, when the First World War began. However, the Prussian steam locomotives were not ready to immediately produce this type of steam engine , therefore, only in 1915 did the Henschel factory produce the first steam engines of the type 1-5-0 in Germany, which were assigned the designation G 12 1 . The plant did not produce these locomotives until 1917, after which it switched to the production of G 12 steam locomotives, which were a two-cylinder version of G 12 1 . In total 33 steam locomotives G 12 1 were produced, of which 21 steam locomotives entered the Prussian Railways (were sent to Erfurt , Kassel and Saarbrücken ), and 12 to the Imperial Railway in Alsace-Lorraine .
At the time of the formation of the Deutsche Reichsbahn , it had 15 steam locomotives in the series, which were assigned the designation 58.0 and numbers 001-015. Due to the difficulty of servicing a three-cylinder machine, already in 1935 these steam locomotives began to be decommissioned gradually. In 1945, there were 2 steam locomotives with numbers 002 and 005 on German roads located on the territory of the German Democratic Republic . In 1957, the last steam locomotive of the series was decommissioned - 58.005.
In addition to Germany, G 12 1 steam locomotives were also operated in other countries. So in France, where 5 steam locomotives got from the Imperial Road, they were assigned the designation 150 B and numbers in the range No. 546-562. Mostly these locomotives were decommissioned until 1955.
