This Boy's Life is an adaptation of Tobias Woolf 's semi-autobiographical book, now a professor of literature at the university, recalling his childhood at the turn of the 1950s and 1960s, by the English director Michael Keyton-Jones . The film is narrated on behalf of the teenager Toby.

Story
USA , 1957 The young woman Caroline ( Ellen Barkin ) lost not only her husband after the divorce, but also the older son Gregory, whom the ex-husband took to his new family, marrying a wealthy woman. Together with her youngest son, Toby ( Leonardo DiCaprio ), she goes on an aimless trip to America .
They stop in several cities where Caroline tries to arrange their lives. In a small town, she meets a car mechanic Dwight Hansen ( Robert De Niro ), whom she marries in the hope that he will bring stability to their lives, will become a support for her and her son. So it seemed to her. Dwight gives the impression of a pleasant and polite person, with a strong outlook on life and good views of the family.
The initial and lasting impression of Dwight turned out to be false. After the wedding, the husband opens up on a completely different side: in fact, he turns out to be a rude and quick-tempered man, prone to alcohol. Tolerate - to fall in love, Caroline believes. True, her son Toby thinks very differently. But dissent is suppressed with all cruelty. Mother suffers, son suffers. So they live. But in the end, Caroline made her choice between personal happiness and the happiness of her child, trying to separate one from the other.
It’s strange, even though Dwight didn’t try to please him, and his character turned out to be cruel and severe, but it is he who will go down in Toby’s memory forever ...
