Initially, Murano was supposed to be only for the American market. Car design was done at Nissan USA in La Jolla, California.

The model was first introduced to the North American market in 2002 at the New York Auto Show. Production for America started in mid-May 2002. Sales began in early June 2002 in the United States and mid-July in Canada. The first generation Murano is based on the Nissan FF-L platform, on which the third generation Nissan Altima is also built. Equipped with a Murano 3.5 liter VQ35DE engine rated at 245 hp. [3]

Official sales of the European version began in 2004. The same 3.5 liter engine was offered on the European market as on the American one. [four]

In September 2004, the crossover began to be delivered to Japan, replacing the Bassara minivan. There, the car was equipped with a 2.5 liter QR25DE engine and a 3.5 liter engine.

In 2005, Murano went through a small restyling. Changed headlights, GPS, small changes in the exterior and trim levels.

Until 2007, Murano was the only Nissan crossover in the US and Canada. In September 2007, Nissan Rogue was introduced, pushing Murano to market.

Murano after 2010

In November 2007, the second generation Nissan Murano was introduced at the Los Angeles Auto Show. Nissan named it Murano 2009 model year, skipping 2008. Sales of the new Murano started in early January 2008.

The front of the crossover was “fitted” to the Nissan Rogue style, the grille, bumper and headlights were changed, the rear windows and the entire rear of the car also changed. The interior has been completely changed, the materials inside have become high-quality.

The range of engines has not changed much. The 3.5 liter engine became more powerful, changing power from 245 to 265 horsepower. The transmission remained CVT, and a 6-speed automatic was added. [5] Second generation Nissan Murano uses the Nissan D platform on which the second generation Nissan Teana is also built.

In September 2008, Nissan Murano went on sale in Japan. There, the crossover cost from 3,150,000 to 4,042,500 yen, which is 300,000 more expensive than the first generation. In Japan, the same gamut of engines was used: 3.5 liters and 2.5 liters especially for the Japanese market.

In 2010, Nissan Murano was restyled. In the changes, the rear and front parts of the car, new headlights and wheels, in the interior a new color for the seat upholstery. Also, only for the European market was added 2.5 liter I4 engine with 190 hp. [6] [7]

In January 2011, at the Nissan plant in St. Petersburg, commercial production of the Murano crossover began. [8]

Murano CrossCabriolet

At the 2010 Los Angeles Auto Show, the Nissan Murano CrossCabriolet was shown. The car was no different (except for the body) from the original Murano, even the engine. The convertible was only available in the LE configuration.

In April 2014, Nissan announced the discontinuation of CrossCabriolet due to poor sales. [9]

Security

The second generation Murano is available with ABS, ESC, EBD and 6 airbags. But the new Murano has become less secure than the first.

The car passed the IIHS test in 2009:
