Biography
Joachim Brendel was born on April 27, 1921 in the town of Ulrichshalben pancake of the Thuringian city of Weimar .
Joachim began his military career in 1941 as a lieutenant in the 1st Group JG 51 on the Eastern Front of the Second World War . Brendel scored his first air victory in his 4th combat departure. Interestingly, his second plane German ace shot down after quite a long time. It happened on March 31, 1942 , and it was already 117 combat sortie of a pilot. Only in early 1943, Brendel began to show his fighter talent, by February there were already 20 enemy planes shot down by his own account, on July 9, 1943 he won his 50th aerial victory. Autumn was very effective for the ace - the rewards did not keep pace with the rapidly growing number of pilot victories. November 22, 1944 Joachim was awarded the Knight's Cross , on this date his battle score was 95 victories. But even on October 16, the German shot down his 150th plane - for this Brendel was awarded the Oak Leaves to the Knight's Cross on January 14, 1945 . On this day he had already 156 air victories. By this time, Joachim was already in the rank of Hauptman and commanded the 3rd Group JG 51 . On April 25, 1945, the German ace won his last victory in this war.
In total, during the years of service in the Luftwaffe, Brendel shot down 189 enemy aircraft and is the most productive JG 51 pilot on the Eastern Front. The number of victories of Joachim also includes 90 well-known Soviet Il-2 attack aircraft [2] [3] .
Brendel died on July 7, 1974 in Cologne .
