LWN.net

LWN.net is an electronic magazine about Linux and free software . It issues a weekly number, consisting of several sections, its own analytical articles several times a week and links to news from other sources several times a day. Much of the magazine’s own material is devoted to the Linux kernel , its API, and related topics; LWN.net is considered one of the best sources for developing drivers and the Linux kernel [4] [5] [6] .

LWN.net exists through advertising and paid subscription. Subscribers are entitled to be the first to read published materials; after a week, all articles are placed in the public domain for unsigned readers [2] .

History

The magazine was created by Elizabeth Coolbaugh and Jonathan Corbet. Published since January 1998 [7] . It was originally called Linux Weekly News, but soon changed its name to LWN.net, as articles in the magazine began to appear not only about Linux, and more often than once a week [2] .

A paid subscription was introduced in September 2002 for financial reasons: advertising covered only a small fraction of the costs of the site, and thanks to blowing off the dotcom bubble , it became impossible to obtain sponsorship of a commercial organization [8] .
