Biography

Education

A. Stepanov graduated from the medical faculty of Moscow University , after which from 1899 he worked at the Institute of Pharmacology, where in 1901 he defended his thesis for a master's degree in pharmacology - the highest academic degree in pharmacology [1] .

Scientific and educational activities

A.V. Stepanov worked in the field of forensic chemistry for 45 years - from 1901 to 1946 . During this time he wrote more than 100 works, including textbooks of judicial, organic and analytical chemistry. The manual β€œForensic Chemistry” written by him in 1929 for his students has survived 4 editions (in 1929 , 1939 , 1947 and 1951 ) and has long been used as a textbook for medical schools .

A.V. Stepanov was the founder and first head of the first department of forensic chemistry in Russia - at the Department of Chemistry and Pharmacy of II Moscow State University , first deputy director for research and first dean of the Moscow Pharmaceutical Institute.

In forensic and organic chemistry, A. V. Stepanov is known for his work on nitration , the breakdown of organochlorine compounds, which were of great importance for the forensic chemical determination of these compounds ( chloroform , chloral hydrate , carbon tetrachloride , dichloroethane , etc.), the development of a method for the destruction of organic compounds with sulfuric acid and ammonium nitrate , used in the determination of metallic poisons ( arsenic , antimony , heavy metals ).

He was buried at the Vagankovsky cemetery .
