NGC 1023 (other designations - UGC 2154 , MCG 6-6-73 , ZWG 523.83 , ARP 135 , PGC 10123 ) is a lenticular galaxy in the constellation Perseus at a distance of about 10 megaparsec (32 million light years . [4] Visible in amateur The telescope belongs to the E / SB0 type galaxies and belongs to the NGC 1023 group of local clusters of galaxies , being the brightest in its group. It was discovered in 1786 by the English astronomer William Herschel using a reflex telescope with a mirror diameter of 47, 5 cm

Thanks to the rotation of NGC 1023, scientists calculated that in the center there should be supermassive black holes with a mass equal to 40 to 60 million solar masses , since otherwise the galaxy will fly apart. NGC 1023 has a small satellite galaxy, labeled NGC 1023A, and along with it NGC 1023 is included in the atlas of peculiar galaxies as Arp 135.
This object is one of those listed in the original edition of the New General Catalog .
NGC 1023 is the brightest galaxy in the group close to us NGC 1023 named after her name [5] . The group is rich in spiral galaxies. It includes spiral NGC 891 , NGC 925 , NGC 1003 , NGC 1058 , NGC 949 , NGC 959 , IC 239 ; the already noted irregular NGC 1023A along with several more dwarf irregular satellites of the central galaxy NGC 1023B, NGC 1023C, NGC 1023D and a number of galaxies.
