NGC 986 (other designations - ESO 299-7 , MCG-7-6-15 , AM 0231-391 , IRAS02315-3915 , PGC 9747 ) is a galaxy in the constellation Pec . Discovered in 1826 by the Scottish astronomer James Dunlop [2] .

This object is one of those listed in the original edition of the New General Catalog .
In the sky, the galaxy is close to the famous densely populated cluster of galaxies in the Furnace . The galaxy is about 56 million light-years away from the Sun and is visible almost flat. Due to this orientation, two main spiral branches and a central structure with a bar (bar) consisting of stars and dust are clearly distinguishable in it. Thus, NGC 986 is a typical barred spiral galaxy [2] .
