Horeg

Horeg ( Greek Χορηγός , from χορός - choir and ἡγεῖσθαι - to lead) - in ancient Greece the name of a wealthy citizen of Athens , who, as a public service and honorable duty, took on the costs of organizing theater performances, preparing the choir and actors during public holidays. Fulfillment of the duties of the Khoreg was the most honorable state duty of Athenian citizens, whose fortune exceeded three talents, and was immortalized on the diaskali, stone slabs exhibited in the fence of the temple of Dionysus “in the swamp”, from where the Dionysian holidays began. The annual lists were also kept in the state archive of Athens on the agora and were published by Aristotle.
