Military career

Victor Bauer was born on September 19, 1915 in Löknitz . In 1935, he joined the Luftwaffe as a fan cadet . His first unit was Group 1 JG 2 , where he received the rank of lieutenant . March 1, 1940 Victor was transferred to JG 77 , here he was assigned to the 2nd Squadron. Bauer won his first air victory on May 15, 1940, east of the Belgian city of Bruges .

In December 1940, the pilot receives a new appointment - this time he takes command of the 9th Squadron JG 3 , which participates in the Battle of Britain . After some time, Bauer with his unit is being moved closer to the borders of the USSR to take part in Operation Barbarossa . Here on the Eastern Front, Viktor's talent as a fighter pilot is truly revealed.

On July 23, 1941, a German ace was seriously wounded in a battle with Soviet pilots; he returned to duty only in February 1942 . Lieutenant Victor Bauer received the knight’s cross on July 30, 1941 - that day on his personal account there were 34 enemy aircraft shot down. A year later, on July 26, 1942 , he receives Oak Leaves to his Knight's Cross for his 102 air victories in the war.

Bauer was soon promoted to Hauptmann . In early August 1942, Victor received the major's epaulettes, and on August 9 he was appointed to the post of commander of the Vostok combat training group ( German: Ergänzungs-Jagdgruppe Ost ), based in southern France . Having received the rank of Oberst Lieutenant , Victor leads the 1st combat training squadron ( German: Ergänzungsjagdgeschwaders 1 ) and until the end of May 1945 remains its commander. Oberst Bauer was captured at the end of the war and was released in July 1945 .

In total, during the years of World War II, Bauer shot down 106 enemy aircraft (102 on the Eastern Front) in more than 400 sorties.

The German ace died on December 13, 1969 in the German resort town of Bad Homburg .
