Biography
Wynn was born in the UK , in Liverpool . In the 1880s he emigrated to the United States . Engaged in journalism without much success; became editor of the puzzle section of the .
As a new puzzle for the Christmas edition of the newspaper, on December 21, 1913, he created Word Cross , the first modern crossword puzzle . A new type of puzzle has gained popularity among readers. Wynn continued to compose weekly “crosswords” ( English cross-word ; the name of the puzzle since 1914) until he retired in 1918.
In 1924, Wynn's invention began to gain in popularity: crosswords appeared in other American newspapers (starting with the New York Herald Tribune ), and in April the first collection of crosswords in the form of a book was published. Crossword puzzles quickly crossed the Atlantic, and Wynn himself composed the first British crossword puzzle that was published on Sunday Express in November 1924.
Wynne died in 1945, leaving no memoirs or diaries.
