Biography

In 1929-33, he worked as a neurosurgeon at the Wenzel-Hacke hospital in Breslau , in 1933, as a Jew, he was forced to resign and worked in a Jewish hospital in Breslau. In 1939 he emigrated to the UK. In 1944, he received a government assignment to create a center for the treatment of patients with musculoskeletal disorders in the Stoke Mandeville Hospital . For this, in 1950 he was introduced to the Order of the British Empire with the rank of officer [1] . In 1960, Guttman was granted the rank of commander [2] . Until 1966, he continued to occupy the post of head of this center. Developed treatments for paralyzed. February 15, 1966 Ludwig Gutman was knighted "for help, suffering from paraplegia" [3] [4] .

He supported sports for his patients. Since 1948, he held the Stoke Mandeville Games - sports competitions for the disabled. In 1952, 130 athletes from different countries participated in them. In 1960, the 1st Paralympic Games took place in Rome . The following year, Guttman founded the British Association of Disabled Athletes [5] . Since 1976 - a member of the Royal Society of London [6] .

He received many British and international awards and honors.

Memory

The Ludwig Guttmann Prize is the Australian Wheelchair Sports Federation Prize [7] and the Deutschesprachige Medizinische Gesellschaft für Paraplegie Prize, awarded for rehabilitating German-language rehabilitation parades lower limbs [8] . In honor of Guttman, the Institut Guttmann Hospital, located in Barcelona , is involved in the treatment of patients with para- and quadriplegia [9] . The Stoke Mandeville Stadium since 1980, until its reconstruction in 2003, was officially called the Ludwig Guttman Sports Center for the Disabled - Stoke Mandeville ( English Ludwig Guttmann Sports Center for the Disabled - Stoke Mandeville ) [10] .
