Luigi de Magistris ( Italian: Luigi de Magistris ; born February 23, 1926 , Cagliari , Kingdom of Italy ) is an Italian curial cardinal and Vatican dignitary. The titular bishop of Nova from March 6, 1996 to November 22, 2001. The titular archbishop of Nova from November 22, 2001 to February 14, 2015. The great prisoner from November 22, 2001 to October 4, 2003, before the appointment of James Stafford . Cardinal Deacon with the titular diaconia Santissimi Nomi di Gesu e María in Via Lata from February 14, 2015.

Biography
Luigi De Magistris was ordained a priest on April 12, 1952 , in Cagliari , Italy . This was followed by his appointment to the Apostolic Penitentiary in April 1979 . He was appointed titular bishop of Nova on March 6, 1996 by Pope John Paul II . He was consecrated bishop on April 28, 1996 . Cardinal Giovanni Canestri , the former archbishop of Genoa , was served by Ottorino Pietro Alberti, archbishop of Cagliari and Tarcisio Pillolla, auxiliary bishop of Cagliari and titular bishop of Cartenne. He was promoted to the level of archbishop of the same diocese on November 22, 2001 .

When Cardinal William Wakefield Baum resigned as Great Penitentiary, De Magistris was appointed Acting Grand Penitentiary , the name used when one who holds the post of Great Penitentiary is not a cardinal. However, on October 4, 2003, he resigned and was replaced by Cardinal James Stafford . [one]

On January 4, 2015, while reading the Angelus prayer, Pope Francis announced that Luigi De Magistris would be elevated to the cardinals on the consistory of February 14, 2015 . [2]
