The administrative center is the village of Bakaly , located 173 km from Ufa and 75 km from Tuymazov .
Geographical position
It is located in the west of Bashkortostan, borders on Ilishevsky , in the east - Chekmagushevsky , in the south - Sharansky districts, in the west - with the Republic of Tatarstan . The area of the district is 1951 km 2 .
The area is located on the northern spurs of the Bugulminsko-Belebeyevskaya Upland , which gently slopes northward towards the Belaya River Valley. The climate is continental and moderately humid. The raised part of the watersheds is characterized by mixed broad-leaved forests , while the lower part is characterized by oak , birch-oak and birch - aspen . Forests occupy 44% of the district. The Xun River flows through the territory of the district, the Ik River flows along its southwestern outskirts. Gray and dark gray forest soils are widespread, leached chernozems are spotted.
Subsoil resources are represented by oil deposits (Mustafinskoye, Kataevskoye), brick raw materials (Bakalinskoye, Kataevskoye, Starokuruchevskoye, Melkenskoye) and sand-gravel mixtures (Karpovskoye, Kileevskoye).
History
The district was established on August 20, 1930 , when, according to the decree of the Presidium of the All-Russian Central Executive Committee, the division of the Bashkir Autonomous Republic into cantons was liquidated and 48 districts were formed.

Economics
The main branch of the region’s economy is agriculture, specializing in grain production, beet farming, potato growing, dairy and beef cattle breeding, pig breeding and beekeeping.

Transport
Highways connect the district with the cities of Ufa (through the village of Chekmagush ) and Tuymazy .
Education and Culture
The region has a higher vocational school and a school for training sellers (the village of Bakaly), 62 secondary schools, including 18 secondary schools; 29 mass libraries, 54 club institutions, 2 hospitals. A regional newspaper is being published.
