NGC 604 is an H II region in the Triangle Galaxy . It was discovered by William Herschel on September 11, 1784. This is one of the largest H II regions in the Local Group of Galaxies . With an estimated distance to the galaxy of 2.7 million St. years , its largest size is about 1,500 St. years (460 pc ), which is more than 40 times the size of the visible part of the Orion Nebula . Its luminosity is 6300 times greater than the luminosity of the Orion Nebula , and if it were at the same distance, it would overshadow Venus . As in all emission nebulae , the gas is ionized by a cluster of massive stars in the center.
