History

The first mention of the Viscounts who had some possessions in Urhel appeared in the 10th century , but it is not known for certain whether they all bore the title of Viscounts of Urhel. The first reliably established Viscount of Urhel was Miro I , mentioned in 953 - 975 years . His son, Guillaume I , received in 989 from Count Borrell II the valley of Castell-leleo ( Cat. Castell-lleó ), which later became known as Castelbo ( Cat. Castellbó [1] ).

Guillaume's son, Miro II, circa 1040, took a vassal oath to Count Cerdani . He was married to the sister of Arnau, Miro de Toast , who significantly expanded the territory of Urhel at the expense of lands conquered from the Moors . Including he conquered Ager . In 1094, Earl of Urhel Ermengol I created the Viscountry of Baho Urhel (Nizhny Urhel), which later received the name Viscountry of Ager, on the conquered lands. And Viscount Urhel Ramon I , the son of Miro II, from 1094 began to bear the title Viscount Alt-Urhel (Upper Urhel).

The son of Ramon I, Pere (Pedro) I (d. 1150) in 1126 married Sybil , daughter and heiress of the Viscount Cerdany Ramon II . Thanks to this marriage, Pere combined both Viscountries in his hands and from this took the title of Viscount Castelbo .
