The railway Milan - Venice ( Italian: Ferrovia Milano - Venezia ) is one of the most important railways in Italy , connecting the capital of Lombardy, Milan and Venice, on the Adriatic coast in the Venice region. This railway is state owned and operated by Rete Ferroviaria Italiana (RFI).

History
The railway was built by the Austro-Hungarian administration during the time of the Lombardo-Venetian kingdom to connect the two most important cities of the country. The original name is Imperial Regia Privilegiata Strada ferrata Ferdinandea Lombardo-Veneta in honor of Emperor Ferdinand I [1] . The road was built in several stages. The first section of Padua - Mestre was opened on December 12, 1842 . The bridge across the Venetian lagoon 3.2 km long with 222 arches on 80 thousand supports of larch was built by January 11, 1846 [2] . At the same time, the Padua - Vicenza section was completed. On February 15, 1846, the Milan - Trevillo section was opened. The Austro-Italian War of 1848–1849 slowed down the construction of the remaining sections. So, the Verona - Vicenza section was opened on July 3, 1849 , Coccaglio - Brescia - Verona - on April 22, 1854 , and Coccaglio - Bergamo - Trevillo - on June 15, 1857 . The construction of the railway was completed on October 12, 1857 with the opening of a bridge over Ollo in the city of Palazzolo (Palazzolo sull'Oglio). The initial route through Treviglio, Bergamo and Brescia was 285 km long. The direct section between Rovato and Trevillo around Bergamo was opened on March 5, 1878 , then the railway acquired its modern form [3] .
