Biography

There is no information about the early years of William Sly. The first time he is mentioned as the performer of the role of Porrex (Porrex) in 1591 along with Augustine Phillips , Thomas Pope, Richard Cowley, and George Brian (his future colleagues in the troupe "Lord Chamberlain's servants") in the play "The Seven Deadly Sins," written probably by Richard Tarleton . It is assumed that in the troupe of “the servants of Lord Chamberlain”, created from the troupes of “the servants of Lord Strange” and “the servants of Lord Admiral” in 1594, he was first a hired actor. The surviving lists of the troupe's performances indicate that Sly played in Ben Johnson ’s plays “Everyone in His Mind” (1598), “Everyone Out of His Moral” (1599) and “Seean” (1603). Perhaps he played the role of Ozrik in Hamlet in 1602 and later. After the conversion of "Lord Chamberlain's servants" into "King's servants" he became one of the troupe's shareholders. Bred under his own name with Richard Burbage in Marston ’s play “Dissatisfied”. In 1605, Sly became a shareholder of the Globus Theater, and in 1608 the Blackfriars Theater, when he was transferred to the "servants of the king." He was buried in the church of St. Leonard in Shoreditch on August 16, 1608.
