NGC 247 is a small spiral galaxy visible almost from the edge, has a compact core. Belongs to the group of galaxies closest to us [2] , called the Sculptor group . According to the observations of 3 different telescopes in 2002-2005, 33 variable stars of the Cephei type δ were discovered in the galaxy. Studying the periods of stars made it possible to calculate the distance to the galaxy equal to 11.8 million sv. years with an accuracy of 6%. [one]

In the sky near NGC 247 there is a group of 4 galaxies, called because of its configuration, the Burbidge's Chain [3] , in the photo at the top left. The group is not gravitationally connected with NGC 247 and is about 350 million light-years distant from us — more than 30 times farther than NGC 247.
